Setting up the Play: Waiting on God

“I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!” —Psalm 27:13–14

“Mama” I heard the word. Our daughter had my attention. “Somethin’s wrong with my sister. Her legs are twitching.” 

“Her legs?” I asked as I stood to walk upstairs. “Yes, mama” she said as she, my husband and I quickly bounded back up the stairs. She was right. Her sister’s legs were definitely twitching. Though she seemed unfazed. 

“Anything hurt?” we asked. “No” she said. Another mysterious symptom, we thought.

Blood sugar check. A little low. Nothing out of the ordinary though. Gatorade, peanut butter, and pretzels to help her glucose out a bit. Water. Lots of water.

Now what? I looked at my husband and he understood that “something is not right” look in my eyes. We pondered. We researched and I happened to visit with an old friend who recommended a new doctor. He didn’t have the answers for a while, but he pondered. He researched. We researched some more. He completed more bloodwork. We prayed, decades of rosaries. We lit candles. We said novenas. 

There seemed to be no answers, yet we knew there must be one. Keep running the next play, we thought, but what is that? 

Keep trusting God, we told ourselves, but some days it felt as if our playbook had run out of plays. We had no idea what to do next. So we did what most people do. We kept living. We kept playing with and praying for our daughter. We kept hoping the next day would come filled with answers and miracles. We invited others into the game to pray with us. Our parents helped to research and asked questions and we waited.

Waiting on God isn't easy. There comes a time when you realize a situation is completely out of your control and relying on Him is all you can do. Some days it didn't feel like He was working at all. Then a small answer would come. A helpful treatment. A new idea. Enough light for the next step. When we look back, we can see how God was there coaching us right along, even though it didn’t always seem like it. He was there lining up the people, and the plays to help us into a diagnosis for our daughter and the next season. 

Lord, praying today for all those families searching for answers about their health, physical or mental. Thank You so much for lining up the people and the plays. It’s hard to wait, at times, for your provision, but we know that with You there is always a greater season ahead. We look forward to the next play. Thank you so much, Lord. Have a beautiful day!
