Between the Laces

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous hand.” – Isaiah 41:10
“Just put your fingers between the laces” my uncles coached. “You’ll be able to throw it in no time.” Except my hand was too small to fit around that big ‘ol ball, so my uncles had to help. They always made me laugh, mostly throwing it on their own, while pretending I was able to launch it. “Your muscles are so big, Jennifer,” they would say. “Just look at how far you threw that ball.” I would giggle because I knew the truth, yet they went on encouraging me.
I kept on throwing that ball and as I grew I could eventually launch it on my own. Though my husband would say “if Mom is throwing left everyone go right because that’s where the ball will be.” And, I laugh and argue back “that’s not true,” but laugh more because I know it kind of is.
Life has taught me that there are things we cannot carry on our own. Sometimes we are holding the football, so busy trying to force our fingers between the laces and throw it with all of our might that we forget to leave room for God’s hands beside ours. We think we need to have a good grip, but it slips, bounces, or takes an unexpected turn and we realize our hands were never meant to hold it all. We can’t fit all of life in the palm of our hand, but God can.
Sometimes, I wonder if faith isn’t learning to throw the perfect pass, but discovering God’s hands have been steadying ours all along.
He helps us through all the battles, the wounds, the health scares, the moments when you think you want to walk away. He meets us on the field, kneels beside us after a hard tackle, and helps us back to our feet. He sees who we are, believes in us, cheers us on even when we throw a wobbly pass. He shows up again and again, so we can show up again and again. He continues to restore us, helping us breathe again until our strength catches up to His faithfulness.
Heavenly Father, thank You for all of your help through our lifetime. When my hands are weak or my aim is off, remind me that You are right there ready to throw the next pass with me. Help me to slow down and notice Your steadiness. Thank You for never asking me to carry life alone. Have a beautiful day, God! Amen.
Y'all have a beautiful day!
All My Love,
Jen
