I absolutely love wine - port wine to be exact. I feel a sense of relaxation and comfort when my lungs fill with the nutty, rich aroma of the wine. Even before I take a sip, I am already anticipating the rich taste and smiling. There is a renewed vigor that the aroma can bring and suddenly I am reminded of all the goodness life holds. Even more importantly though, I don’t have to look far to find this comfort and relaxation over and over again.
Every morning when I wake, I am reminded that God’s “compassions never fail. They are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23). God gives us a fresh start each day. He provides space for us to carry the lessons that we learn into the next day and asks us to stay “devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above [ourselves]” (Romans 12:10).
Like a fine wine we grow better with age and sometimes taking a break or stepping back from one another helps us to gain a fresh perspective. Maybe we understand each other a little better, maybe we recognize that the love we share is the richness that we needed to enter life with a renewed sense of vigor, maybe we realize that it was never really about us, but about God’s work within us and look forward with great anticipation to the full-bodied, refreshment that only He can bring while we rest in the rhythm of a brand new day.
